Which sauna stoves are better: cast iron, steel or stainless steel?

The material from which the firebox is made determines the most significant parameters of a wood-burning stove: from the service life to the heating time of the steam room. The market offers models of sauna stoves made of cast iron, black steel, 09G2S steel (a type of black steel) and stainless steel. Each material has both undeniable advantages and disadvantages. Let's try to figure out both together.

To compare all the listed materials, let's first define the criteria. In our opinion, it is best to use the following comparative characteristics:

  • Burnout temperature;
  • Thickness;
  • Oven service life;
  • Steam room heating speed;
  • Oven cooling time;
  • Fragility of the material;
  • And, of course, the price.

Sauna stoves made of cast iron are the most popular, but there are nuances

There is an opinion among the common people that cast iron stoves are the ideal option. This conclusion has its reasons. Firstly, cast iron is a material that practically does not burn out. With proper operation, a cast iron stove will last ten, or even twenty-plus years! However, there is one caveat here - such a period can actually occur if the manufacturer uses a good alloy and follows the casting technology. The casting must be even and smooth.

Fig 1. Cast iron firebox of the Vesuvius Legend bathhouse stove

At first glance, if this condition is met, then everything is ideal, but cast iron has its own Achilles heel - fragility. In other words, with sudden changes in temperature, such a stove can simply burst - and, you see, this is not the most pleasant situation for bath procedures.

By the way, if you have not yet decided on the stove model, we recommend reading our article “Which stove is best for a Russian bath.”

The second nuance of the material is that cast iron takes a long time to heat up, although it takes longer to cool down.

The heating time for a steam cast iron stove is 1.5-2 hours. Cooling time is the same. The burnout temperature of a cast iron stove is 1200 degrees Celsius.

Another nuance of cast iron stoves is their thickness. You should pay special attention to the thickness of the material if the casting is not of the best quality (for example, it has potholes or holes). In this case, for a long service life of the furnace, the thickness should be at least 15-20 mm. If the casting is of good quality, then the thickness can be less - 8-12 mm.

As for the cost of cast iron stoves for a bath, prices for such stoves start from 25 thousand rubles. This is 20-25% more expensive than stoves made of black or boiler steel, but, for example, professional models of cast iron stoves will be comparable in price to the price of steel stoves.

Which company should you choose?

In Russia there are a number of companies specializing in the production of cast iron and steel heating devices not only for residential or industrial premises, but also for baths and saunas.

Among them, experts highlight the following:

  • Teplodar is a company with original patented technologies and its own development of materials that ensure the reliability and durability of furnaces, resistance to temperature changes and damage. A high-quality production process control system reduces the risk of burnout or damage to walls and parts to almost zero;
  • Vesuvius - unusual stoves with original design. The brand offers a wide range of models in various styles: from classic to avant-garde. The second advantage of their furnaces is their affordable price, ease of installation (with rare exceptions) and high efficiency rates due to the design features of the walls;
  • ETNA are productive and highly thought-out stoves with precise calculations of the thermal load on all elements. This approach allowed the manufacturer to reduce the wall thickness without loss of efficiency, and accordingly reduce weight, metal costs and product costs;
  • Termofor - the main feature of their products is the smooth heating of the room and soft steam, which is achieved due to the special shape of the elements, which, in turn, provide the necessary density and power of heat flows. The models are easy to install and affordable; there are options of different power for different areas.

Structural “black” steel - a budget material for a sauna stove

Such sauna stoves are truly the most budget-friendly. The price tag for furnaces made of “black” steel starts from 12 thousand rubles. Therefore, if you have spent money on building a bathhouse and have limited finances, but you need a stove like air, then this is an ideal option. But besides cost, stoves made of structural “black” steel have other features that are worth knowing about in order to make an informed decision.

Fig. 2. In Ermak sauna stoves, the firebox is made of structural steel

The first feature is low heat resistance. By heat resistance we mean the ability of a material to withstand high temperatures without breaking down. So, the heat resistance of structural black steel is 400 degrees Celsius. And if we take into account that the temperature inside the sauna stove fluctuates between 500-600 degrees Celsius, then the second feature of such stoves arises - a short service life due to the destruction of the material. To compensate for the low heat resistance of this material, manufacturers produce fireboxes with increased thickness (up to 8 mm).

The service life of black steel furnaces is 5-8 years. Burnout temperature is 400 degrees Celsius.

The advantages of such stoves, in addition to being budget-friendly, include a fast heating speed. The downside is the same cooling speed. Another plus is that there are no problems with brittleness, like their cast iron counterparts.

And, of course, models of black steel stoves can be made in interesting design solutions. You can look at them in our “Stoves for baths” section by selecting the filter item “Stove firebox material - thick-walled structural steel.”

Furnaces made of boiler steel 09g2s - an improved version of furnaces made of “black” steel at the same price

Steel 09g2s is the same structural steel, but with the addition of alloying elements. In terms of properties, boiler steel 09g2s occupies a middle position between black steel and stainless steel.

Artemenko Vyacheslav Manager of the store on the street. Kollontai, 18

Alloying elements are special additives that increase the heat resistance of steel.

The heat resistance of such material is within 500 degrees Celsius. Accordingly, it also needs to be compensated for by thickness, but less. Fireboxes with a thickness of no more than 3-6 mm are produced from boiler steel, but the service life of such stoves is longer than similar fireboxes made of black steel.

The burnout temperature of a firebox made of steel 09g2s is 500 degrees Celsius. Thickness: 3-6 mm. The service life is from 7 to 10 years.

Let us note another pleasant point for bathhouse attendants - despite the better consumer properties of the material (increased durability), stoves made of 09G2S steel are still the same in price as stoves made of black steel. The key word is “for now” - we won’t guess what will happen in the near future.

Fig 3. Grill'D and Vesuvius Skif sauna stoves are made of 09g2s steel

As for the heating rate of the steam room and the cooling time, boiler steel 09g2s has the same indicators as “black” steel. By the way, if you are interested in the issue of maintaining heat in a steam room, then pay attention to the article “Choosing a stone for a sauna stove.”

Steel 09g2s is not a brittle material, so the main advantage over black steel is durability.

A little history... Manufacturers first began using 09g2s boiler steel only in 2021, and the mass trend for it was picked up only in 2021. Thanks to the advantages of the material, more and more brands are appearing on the market that prefer 09g2s steel. One of these brands is the Grill'D company, which produces all its oven models from this material (except for the PRO models, made of stainless steel). Another popular manufacturer that produces stove models from this material is the Vesuvius company.

Stainless steel stoves - the best performance

Today, stainless steel fireboxes are rightfully considered one of the best on the market. Judge for yourself: the heat resistance of such sauna stoves is as much as 800 degrees! This is 200-300 degrees higher than the maximum temperature inside the sauna stove. It follows from this that scale will not form in such furnaces.

The burnout temperature of stainless steel stoves is 800 degrees Celsius. Thickness - 2-6 mm.

The high temperature resistance also determines that the stove will serve faithfully for a very long time - more than 20 years! Durability is not the only advantage of such stoves: they are not fragile, quickly heat the steam room, and are available in various design solutions.

Fig. 4. Grill'D PRO series sauna stoves are made of stainless steel 4 mm thick.

The only disadvantage of stainless steel stoves is the price. It is 2-3 times higher than the price of stoves made of structural steel or 09g2s. In order to level out the difference, stoves are produced from stainless steel with a thickness of 2 mm. The price becomes comparable to stoves made of black steel (from 15 thousand rubles), but 4-6 mm models still remain on sale. thick (from 40 thousand rubles).

By the way, we did not stipulate at the very beginning that the article will focus specifically on stoves for baths, and not for saunas. If you have not delved into this issue yet, we recommend that you read our article: “What is the difference between sauna stoves and sauna stoves.”
