How I upgraded Buleryan

The design features of the stove in question are such that it can initially distribute oxygen efficiently and evenly within itself. The tubes at the bottom draw in cold oxygen, and the heated air is discharged from those installed at the top. If desired, you can provide forced oxygen circulation.

I took tubes of a suitable diameter and welded adapters from them to the holes of the stove pipe located below. I plugged the adapter at one end.

The other side was connected to the fan.

I decided to use “snail” fan models. To ensure their operation, in my case, a 90-watt motor at 2800 rpm was enough.

The results are excellent - after modification, Buleryan began to work even more efficiently.

Heat accumulators are most often used in greenhouses, where there are almost no walls, which in standard buildings can accumulate heat. The hinged panels, made of painted steel plates, correspond to the shape of the Buleryan model; for this reason, a separate type of heat accumulator is produced for each of them.

This device is installed on the top of the heat exchange pipes and rests against their lower ends. It is filled with various heat-intensive materials, such as coarse crushed stone, broken brick, pebbles and others.

The combustion process and the mechanism of pyrolysis

The main physical phenomenon, without which it is impossible to imagine the operation of any furnace, is the oxidation of various substances by oxygen contained in the air.
Fire, tamed by our ancestors millions of years ago, has become so familiar today that we don’t even think about how combustion occurs, with which each of us has been familiar since childhood. The seemingly simple question “how does wood burn?”, in fact, requires a separate explanation. After all, without understanding the basics, we will not be able to understand how economical pyrolysis furnaces work and why they are so good and economical. Actually, the formation of a flame occurs in several stages:

  1. First, the wood heats up and dries, releasing water vapor into the environment, which prevents fire from starting. This requires an external source of energy, which is usually flammable paper, kindling liquid, or a pile of small burning wood chips.
  2. Firewood, which from a chemical point of view is a complex organic structure, consists of three main elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. When heated, wood disintegrates, and these components, in the form of various simple gaseous compounds, begin to be released into the surrounding space. The general name for all substances formed during fuel heating is pyrolysis gases, and for the process itself is pyrolysis.
  3. At the next stage, the wood decomposition products ignite and accelerate the pyrolysis of the remaining logs more and more, providing the fire with fresh fuel.
  4. In the end, the tree burns, leaving behind some of the coals that did not have time to react with the oxidizing agent.

How combustion occurs

Actually, the idea that made it possible to build long-burning furnaces is to ensure the most complete decomposition of fuel in such a way that after its use there is practically no unburned waste left. To do this, it was necessary to slow down the pyrolysis as much as possible so that the entire volume of firewood would gradually and completely disintegrate into pyrolysis gases.

How does such a stove work?

If we take an extremely general approach to considering the structure and design features of Breneran stoves, then, in fact, in their main characteristics they resemble the domestic “potbelly stoves” that have been used in the country since 1918. But upon closer examination of the issue, you begin to understand that this is far from the case, and apart from their outwardly similar appearance, there is simply nothing in common between them. Canadian Breneran stoves use a slightly different type of room heating. These stoves heat buildings not through natural air convection, but almost forcibly creating a fairly decent draft without the use of additional mechanical devices and electric motors. Furnaces of this design consist of:

  • housings;
  • chimney;
  • regulators of air supply to the furnace and the rate of exit of flue gases.

Additionally, various protective devices can be added to the furnace design to protect users and buildings from contact with the hot surface of the furnace. Or a natural stone stand at the top of the oven, which can be used in different ways - for example, for roasting meat on stones.

Features and installation methods of Breneran Aquaten

As already noted, the design of the stove allows the use of any options for connecting water heating. The device can be used in systems with forced and natural coolant circulation.

When carrying out installation work, safety regulations regarding the installation of the stove and the connection of the smoke exhaust system, and the features of closed and open systems are taken into account. The performance and heat transfer are affected by the type of boiler piping and the coolant used.

Fire safety requirements

Manufacturer JSC Laotherm received a fire safety certificate for the Aqua Breneran water circuit furnace. This indicates that the boiler is protected from accidental fire, and with proper operation, the likelihood of a fire is minimized.

Installation in a residential area is carried out taking into account the existing safety regulations applicable to high-pressure boilers:

  1. The stove is mounted on a solid non-combustible base. For models AOTV 14, 16 and 19, a concrete base is required.
  2. On the firebox side, the floor is covered with a sheet of steel, at least 1.25 m in length.
  3. The distance to plastered walls is at least 1 m, with additional insulation of 0.8 m.
  4. The dimensions of the room for installing the stove are at least 12 m².
  5. The boiler room must have a ventilation duct and good natural air ventilation.
  6. Automatic switches for turning off the heating element and circulation equipment are installed in adjacent rooms.

The presence of a safety group for the Breneran Aquaten solid fuel pyrolysis boiler (including a safety valve, air valve, pressure gauge, membrane expansion tank) is mandatory. Commissioning without safety valves is prohibited.

Installation of a smoke removal system

The rules for installing a chimney are described in detail in SNiP 41-01-2003. According to the standards, the height and diameter are calculated depending on the performance of the furnace. When installing the chimney, closely adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations:

  • Distances to structural units, beams and rafters are calculated depending on the chimney material. For a brick and ceramic chimney with insulation, the fire gap is at least 13 cm, without insulation 25 cm.
  • The chimney height should be from 5 to 9 m, depending on the stove model.
  • A deflector is installed on the chimney head to improve draft characteristics.

Connection to a natural circulation system

The heating system with natural coolant circulation is the most popular due to its ease of installation and the absence of a large number of additional components. There are several rules associated with installation:

  • The stove is located at least 0.5 m below the radiators.
  • The pipes are placed at an angle - the slope is made in the direction of coolant circulation.
  • An open expansion tank is installed at the highest point of the heating system. The tank capacity is selected depending on the total volume of coolant, in a proportion of 10%. Correct installation of an open type expansion tank is carried out on the return line of the heating system. If the container is installed in an unheated attic, be sure to thermally insulate the device.
  • A safety group is installed on the coolant supply.

Strict requirements regarding the observance of inclination angles are imposed on the distribution of pipes of a heating system with natural circulation.

Connection to a forced circulation system

The main difference from the previous option is that a closed-type heating system requires a circulation pump. Forced circulation of coolant has many advantages, including better heat transfer, efficiency and heating speed. The only drawback is the dependence on electricity.

Installation of a forced circulation heating system is carried out in accordance with the following recommendations:

  • The circulation pump is installed on the return coolant supply, between the expansion tank and the boiler. It is recommended to install a temperature sensor to regulate the operation of the boiler, depending on the heating intensity and pressure created in a closed system.
  • The connection is made with a closed expansion tank. No air enters the heating system, which has a positive effect on the service life of pipes, radiators and the boiler itself.
  • For uninterrupted operation of the pump, you will need to install a UPS with a built-in voltage regulator.

The maximum pressure in a closed heating system is not higher than 7 atm. High rates lead to rupture of the water circuits located on the stove. To prevent damage, be sure to install a security group.

Which pipes are best for piping?

Piping of the boiler affects further operation, performance and other characteristics of the heating system. The choice of material should be approached consciously. Below are the three most popular options:

  • Piping the heating system with steel pipes - the advantages include resistance to overheating, low linear expansion, strength and high thermal conductivity. Disadvantages include the complexity of installation and the need for welding. It is better to do installation before renovating the premises so as not to spoil the finish. Another disadvantage can be considered that the diameter of the water circuit pipe will be significantly larger than that of polypropylene or metal-plastic; accordingly, a higher power furnace will be required for heating.
  • Heating pipes made of polypropylene - the material has many advantages: light weight, long service life, heat resistance, attractive appearance, smooth inner surface. You can lay heating pipes around the house yourself. To do this you will need a soldering iron and several construction tools.
  • Metal-plastic pipes are another option for a material intended for a heating system. The advantages of metal-plastic are: quick installation, non-corrosive, high temperature resistance, plasticity. The disadvantages are that the pipe is susceptible to “breaking.” Metal-plastic pipes are used for installing heating systems with forced circulation of coolant. Heating can be done using copper, stainless steel and other pipes. But, as practice shows, the options listed above are the most popular.

What coolant is best to fill into Breneran and the system

Ordinary and distilled water and antifreeze are used as a coolant. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages:

  • Water – the main disadvantage is the ability of the liquid to freeze even at a temperature of -1°C. Therefore, distilled and ordinary water is used only if you plan to heat the house throughout the entire season. It is strictly forbidden to pour water saturated with metals. For long-term operation of the furnace, it is recommended to install water treatment and a filtration system.

  • Antifreeze or antifreeze can be added to the system. The heating system does not shrink even when the room temperature drops below 15-20°C. But using antifreeze has its drawbacks. Any leaky connection will definitely leak. The total volume of coolant in the heating system often reaches more than 150 liters. Buying antifreeze requires a serious investment.

  • Incorrect calculations - the real power of Breneran is 10-15% lower than indicated in the technical documentation. This difference must be taken into account during calculations.
  • The number of connected radiators in systems with natural coolant circulation directly affects the intensity of their heat transfer. The farther the battery is from the stove, the less it warms up. The last radiators, especially if the slopes are broken, will be practically cold.

Before starting operation, you will need to correctly adjust the Breneran Aquaten, set the parameters and heating temperature of the coolant. All settings should be performed following the instructions provided in the technical documentation.

How to properly drown Aquaten Breneran

At first, it seems that heating Breneran on your own is quite difficult, but with some practice, heating the room will become increasingly easier. The principle of kindling is as follows:

  • The power regulator and gasifier are set to the maximum open position.
  • Using wood chips and paper, a fire is started.
  • After the fire has flared up, the combustion chamber is filled to 80-90%.
  • The combustion continues until the temperature sensor shows heating to 180-200°C, approximately 20 minutes.
  • The gasifier regulator is closed at least 45°.

For kindling, it is better to use unsplit logs. The length of the firewood must match the combustion chamber so that the door closes tightly without effort. There is no need to remove ash; it is necessary for normal fuel gasification.

How to remove condensation ↑

There is another known problem that is associated with the operation of Breneran. Its smoke pipe, as you know, is located on the wall of the stove at the back. A tee is mounted here - a chimney pipe is connected to it. At the bottom there is a glass plug for condensate. This design does not have the required tightness. And this is a problem, because condensation inevitably and steadily enters the air, which is not good. Some craftsmen adapt their own solutions, making sealed containers to collect condensate, while others remove it from the room using pipe devices. In short, we have to innovate as best we can, because the market, alas, does not offer ready-made solutions.

How does the stove work

The operation of such a furnace design is based on the classical laws of physics, which state that hotter gases tend to rise. Therefore, on the side of the furnace there are peculiar accelerating nozzles, made in the form of pipe sections, which do not protrude too much beyond the external dimensions of the Breneran furnaces and do not make it more massive. When the furnace heats up, the middle part warms up the most; accordingly, colder air from below rushes into the guide pipes, due to the fact that the heated air begins to rise and a vacuum is created in the pipe. The incoming air heats up to 150 degrees while it is inside the furnace casing, but this depends on the mode and intensity of the furnace operation, and goes back into the room. Some versions of such furnaces allow water to be used as a coolant instead of air passage, but in this case the length of the pipe section is increased to 2-3 turns around the furnace body, and the heater has only one input-output pair.

The developed technology for the production of the furnace and the special configuration of the firebox, together with the air supply and flue gas exhaust pipelines, allows the furnace to operate in two modes: (See also: Do-it-yourself slow burning furnace)

  1. kindling;
  2. combustion using re-gasification.

In the furnace ignition mode, the air and flue gas supply valves are fully opened. Throughout the entire initial heating time (10-20 minutes), the oven maintains a high temperature and allows maximum air passage. In this mode, the efficiency of the furnace does not exceed 35-50%.

After the stove has warmed up sufficiently, it switches to normal combustion mode. It can remain in this state for up to six months; it will only be necessary to periodically replenish the fuel supply in the firebox. To switch to combustion mode, the air supply is closed. After this, the exit of flue gases is practically blocked. The furnace goes into re-gassing mode and its efficiency increases to 80%. In this mode of operation, it is important to correctly set the passage of flue gases so as not to overcool them, otherwise there will be an increased formation of combustion product sediments in the chimney pipe. In principle, this is not critical and, apart from an unpleasant odor and the need to clean the chimney more often, will not lead to any negative effects.

The operating mode of the furnace is extremely economical and with the correct selection of the opening ratio of the input and output valves, it is possible to ensure that fuel will need to be added only once every 12 hours, and there will be practically no ash left at the outlet - it will all be burned out.
