Bath accessories, Brooms

A broom made from branches of deciduous or coniferous trees is a real symbol of the Russian bath. A massage with a broom invigorates and heals.

But to use it profitably, it needs to be properly prepared - soaked or steamed. Then he will give away all his healing substances, vitamins, phytoncides and essential oils.

What are bath brooms made of?

When making bath brooms, almost all domestic species of trees and shrubs, and even some herbs, are used. Each of them has its own characteristics, beneficial properties, methods of use and steaming. True connoisseurs of Russian baths give preference to one type, sometimes, for the sake of novelty of sensations, using others. In order for a beginner to choose a broom that suits him best, he needs to try several options. But you need to start with birch or oak brooms, as they are the most popular and widespread in any region of Russia.

Birch

Birch branches are one of the most accessible materials for brooms throughout Russia.
The branches are cut when the birch tree is flowering, when the first signs of catkins appear. But only those that don’t have earrings are cut off. At this time, the leaf is the most juicy, and the young branches are still flexible, but already quite strong and not brittle. Birch leaves have a porous surface that adheres well to the body. When handled correctly, they do not overheat and do not leave burn marks on the steamed body. In folk medicine, decoctions are made from the leaves - the beneficial substances and essential oils they contain have a beneficial effect on the skin and hair. And birch brooms have the same medicinal properties.

There are no steaming tricks - any method given below is suitable.

Oak

The oak broom is not inferior to the birch broom in popularity. Dense and wide leaves provide steam well and massage the body, and the strength of oak branches does not need advertising. The beneficial and tannin substances contained in the leaves help heal small wounds, have an antiseptic effect on pustules and pimples, and normalize the functioning of the sweating system.

Harvesting is done in August or September, choosing branches of “winter” oak, growing in damp and dark groves. Popular superstitions say that the best brooms are made if burdocks grow under the tree.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is an exotic evergreen plant brought to Europe from Australia. It grows only in regions with a hot and humid climate - on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus in the Sochi region and the southern coast of Crimea. In medicine, tinctures from leaves and eucalyptus oil are used for inhalation of the upper respiratory tract. In the steam room, you can spray the walls with tincture to get a similar healing effect.

Bath brooms are knitted from twig-shaped eucalyptus branches, harvested in late autumn - this time of year marks the peak of the plant’s medicinal properties. But thin branches and large leaves are inconvenient for use by inexperienced users. Therefore, combined brooms, in which several eucalyptus twigs are mixed with birch or oak, have become more widespread. In such cases, they are steamed according to the same rules, and the remaining water, like a tincture, is sprayed on the walls of the steam room or poured onto the heater to provide healing steam.

Coniferous plants

Several types of coniferous plants are used for bath brooms:

  • Fir. It is believed that among conifers, fir broom has the best healing properties. The oils of a steamed broom have a beneficial effect on the skin and muscles, relieving tension and pain. The resin contained in the bark of conifers has an anti-inflammatory effect, and phytoncides kill pathogenic microbes. The only drawback of fir is that it grows beyond the Urals and in the Far East. There is no point in harvesting for future use and transporting it to the European part of Russia - the needles will fall off.
  • Spruce. It is only slightly inferior to fir in its therapeutic and prophylactic properties, but is found everywhere.
  • Juniper. Just like all conifers, it has antibacterial properties. In addition to the preventive and therapeutic effects on the skin, juniper broom relieves muscle spasms, helps with arthritis and radiculitis.

Despite the fact that coniferous trees are evergreen, the best time to make brooms is the end of spring.

Note! For sensitive skin, brooms made from coniferous trees may be too harsh. First, you need to carefully try how the skin tolerates the effects of sharp pine needles - if it’s normal, continue the procedure, gradually increasing the force of the blows to a tolerable limit. Coniferous brooms are not recommended for bathing procedures for people with damaged skin.

Although coniferous brooms are not used dry, they must be soaked and steamed. There are several main ways to prepare a coniferous broom for a bath procedure. They differ in details, but the general principle of alternating cold and hot water is common:

  • The branches are washed with cold water, doused with boiling water, and immersed in cold water for another half hour.
  • Soak the broom in cold water for up to half an hour, take it out, and shake it off. Then pour hot water, immerse the broom to the handle, and hold for another 15-20 minutes. Before use, rinse with warm water to “bring down” the temperature. As a result, the needles become soft and less prickly. Water after steaming, as in other cases, is used for washing or splashed on the heater in the steam room.
  • First, the broom is soaked in cold water, and in a steam room it is immersed in boiling water for 5 minutes. Then they lightly dry it over a heater, saturating the air with the aromas of pine needles.

Nettle

A broom made from nettle, which has retained its burning properties, is suitable for lovers of thrills. Properly collected and dried nettle stems help with rheumatic pain, gout, arthritis and radiculitis. There are soaking and steaming techniques that can leave the nettle stinging, or vice versa - make it completely “harmless”. In the first case, the broom is soaked in warm water for 5-10 minutes, in the second, it is moved from hot water to cold water several times, holding for 4-5 minutes each time.

Nettles are picked and tied into bunches at the end of spring, dried in the shade. Unlike a broom made from deciduous or coniferous trees, nettle can withstand only one procedure and is no longer suitable for reuse.

Important! In order to perceive the nettle broom normally, you must first steam it thoroughly.

Sagebrush

A wormwood bath broom is no less useful than others, but not everyone likes the pungent smell of the plant in a steam room. Wormwood calms the nervous system, improves blood circulation and sweating, and has an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin.

Wormwood is picked after flowering, choosing strong and dense stems. Dry the tied brooms in the shade, store them in a cool place, and use them only once.

Maple

A maple bath broom has a general tonic effect on the body, relieves the feeling of fatigue and pain. Flexible branches and whipping leaves warm and massage the skin well. Steaming before the procedure is carried out using the same methods as for oak or birch brooms.

Cold and hot methods

These steaming methods are suitable for any wood brooms. The simplest of them is cold. To process, you will need to place the bundle in a container with cold water 10-12 hours before going to the steam room.

After the allotted time, the broom is completely ready for use. The hot method is more labor-intensive, but it allows you to achieve maximum softness and aroma of branches and leaves.

  • 5 hours before going to the bathhouse, you should rinse the broom well, first with warm and then with hot water.
  • Excess moisture should be shaken off well and the bundle should be placed in a tight bag.
  • After 40 minutes, the branches are rinsed again with hot water and held for 10-20 seconds over bath stones to remove excess moisture.
  • Two hours before going to the bathhouse, place the broom in a container under a lid with warm water. It takes 30-40 minutes to hold the bundle like this.
  • Periodically, the bundle needs to be turned over to achieve uniform steaming.
  • After the allotted time, the broom is placed with the handle down in some basin or bucket with warm water for 10 minutes.

Since after a long steaming a lot of moisture can accumulate in the broom, it should be held over the stones for 10-15 seconds at the end.

Steaming procedure

Steaming is a type of massage that is used to warm up the body and relax ligaments and muscles. Before steaming, a person lies down on his stomach, and a professional bathhouse attendant, friend or relative begins by lightly stroking the feet with brooms, and gradually reaches the head and hands. Then brooms lead in the opposite direction. They are passed along the sides using stroking movements. The procedure is repeated three to four times. Each lasts about a minute. After stroking movements, they begin lashing strokes. They cover the back from the shoulder blades to the lower back, then the legs. The quilting ends at the heels. The duration of the procedure is 1 minute.

The next step is more intense stroking movements that go over the back and legs. After they are completed, the person soaring turns over onto his back. The partner repeats the described techniques while maintaining the sequence of actions.

After stroking and quilting movements, begin light compresses using a broom. First the back is treated. The brooms are slightly lifted, as if capturing air, and 2-3 whip them over each part of the body separately. The brooms are lowered onto the body with the side that was facing upward and became hotter. The broom is pressed against the skin for 2-3 seconds. The procedure is performed over the entire surface of the body, starting with the shoulder blades and ending with the shins. Such compresses relax tense muscles, relieve their tone, and improve blood flow.

Following the compress on the feet, brooms are applied to the lower back and at the same time slowly directed in different directions like scissors - to the head and feet. The reception is carried out 4-5 times. The person soaring turns over onto his back and this technique is repeated again. After the fifth time, the body is allowed to rest. In subsequent visits to the pair, the procedure can be repeated if desired. It doesn't hurt to use aromatic substances that can be sprayed on the shelves. The mixture is made up as follows: 20 aromatic drops per 3 liters of water. The bath attendant is not a stoker. He must be able to control brooms, steam and heat. In this case, the healing effect is enhanced many times over.

LEGAL BASIS FOR PROCESSING PERSONAL DATA

14. The legal basis for the processing of personal data is:

1. Legislation of the Russian Federation in the field of personal data based on the Constitution of the Russian Federation and international treaties of the Russian Federation and consisting of Federal Law of July 27, 2006 No. 152-FZ “On Personal Data” and other federal laws defining cases and features of the processing of personal data ;

2. consent to the processing of personal data, the conditions of which are confirmed by the subject of personal data when working with the feedback form on the Operator’s website;

3. civil contracts concluded by the Operator with counterparties, annexes to these contracts.

General recommendations for the steaming procedure

Each Russian bath lover has his own method of steaming, but the general recommendations are the same for everyone:

  • Before soaking, wash off the dust from the leaves under clean running water or rinse the broom in a basin.
  • During steaming, you need to monitor the condition of the foliage - it should not become soggy and flabby.
  • The water is not thrown away after steaming. It is perfect as a hair rinse when washing your hair. Having absorbed the beneficial substances from the broom, the water has a beneficial effect on the skin, saturates it with the natural aroma of the leaves, eliminates dandruff, and returns shine to the hair.

TRANSFER OF PERSONAL DATA TO THIRD PARTIES

21. To achieve the purposes of processing personal data and with the consent of the subjects of personal data, the Operator provides personal data or entrusts their processing to the following persons:

1. government agencies;

2. individuals who are in labor and civil relations with the Operator’s counterparties.

3. individuals who are in labor and civil legal relations with the Operator.

22. In order to fulfill contractual obligations or requirements of federal legislation, the Operator receives personal data from the following third parties:

1. Partners or other persons in accordance with a civil law agreement.

Aromatherapy in the bath

Natural aromas have a beneficial effect on human health. Aromatherapy treats pulmonary, cardiovascular, and psychosomatic diseases. Some fragrances are used for preventive purposes.

For a healing effect, it is recommended to use no more than three aromas at a time. In this case, everyone’s individuality will be felt.

The procedure should be properly organized as follows. Three bunches of different aromatic plants are taken and placed as high as possible in a corner away from the stove. When water hits the heater, wet steam is formed, and it rises to the ceiling, envelops the plants and steam distillation occurs, as a result of which the steam releases phytoncides and distributes them throughout the steam room. Thus, the resulting aroma is absorbed through the lungs and body of the steamer, and he receives healing pleasure.

Secret: freshly picked plants will not give the desired effect, and therefore they are first dried. In this case, the concentration of nutrients in them reaches its peak. Some types of flora do not accept “competition”, for example: mint, wormwood, eucalyptus are placed in the steam room in a single form. That is, the first time the steamer breathes mint, the second - wormwood, the third - eucalyptus. Otherwise, the herbal cacophony will not bring pleasure. Eucalyptus brooms can additionally be placed under the head as part of the procedure. This will enhance the beneficial effect of aromatherapy.

Among experienced bath attendants, the sweet clover plant is held in high esteem. Due to its composition, it is considered a herbal massager, since its vapors are actively absorbed into the blood with a good healing effect.

Lavender is used in the steam room as a calming and relaxing agent. A few drops of lavender oil can be dissolved in a small glass container and placed on the top section of the shelf.

Precautionary measures

The inhalation effect can be so strong that it is better for people with heart problems, allergies, hypertension, and children to refrain from an aromatherapy session.

Chemical fragrances should not be used to avoid poisoning. If you decide to use store-bought essential oils instead of plants, look for a quality product with good reviews. Natural essential oil is produced using expensive equipment and is not cheap, while a cheap product will be useless at best.

The herbal infusion must be strained before pouring onto the heater. If this is not done, plant particles will smoke when in contact with hot stones, forming toxins. An unpleasant smell should also alert you. If the combination of aromas results in a “strange” odor, irritation or discomfort, get rid of the mixture and leave the steam room for a while.

If essential oils come into contact with your eyes, immediately rinse them with plenty of water.

Do not use fragrances if you have allergies, in childhood or during pregnancy.

Follow the instructions. You should not drop essential oil onto your eye. Excessive amounts of the drug increases the risk of allergies even in healthy people.

Use nature's pharmacy without fanaticism. Listen to your body and do not neglect the recommendations of doctors.

Where to get a fresh broom

In our northern regions there are no problems with forests, birches, willows, rowan trees and other deciduous and coniferous trees.

In villages and summer cottages (where most city residents have bathhouses) away from city smog, this is the best place to choose a fresh broom.

I know bathhouse lovers who specially plant a birch tree next to the bathhouse so that the fresh leaves of the broom will delight them all summer.

And there are also bathhouse attendants who find it easier to stop by the nearest store and buy a ready-made, dry broom.

It is generally accepted that you need to prepare branches for Trinity. As you know, this church holiday is celebrated at different times every year. Basically, it occurs at the end of May - beginning of June.

According to popular beliefs, the process of weaving brooms must be completed after August 2 (Ilyin’s Day). The exception is brooms made from oak branches. It is believed that by this time they are not able to show their healing effect.

How to steam a bath broom, brew it correctly

Real steam lovers prefer to use everything made in-house. It is better to prepare raw materials for this product in late June or early July. You need to do this when it’s dry outside. Young tree branches are ideal. Typically a bouquet consists of 50 branches.

In Rus', it has long been a custom to steam with a fragrant broom. This is not only an ancient tradition, but also a great way to take care of your health. The fact is that whipping and pulling are nothing more than an effective massage.

  • Massage improves blood circulation.
  • Increases sweating (which means it helps remove waste and toxins from the body faster).
  • Speeds up metabolism.

For a massage to bring maximum pleasure and benefit, it must be properly organized. Before the procedure, the dry collection must be steamed by immersing it in cold water for 10-15 minutes, and then in hot water for 3-4 minutes.

If the plant has just been collected, you don’t need to do anything with it, just wash off the dirt. After soaking, the liquid is able to absorb some of the beneficial properties, so it is better not to throw it away, but to use it to wash the body.

She will help:

  • Cope with dandruff.
  • Strengthen your hair.
  • Give them shine and a special aroma.

It is not recommended to brew freshly picked bouquets. Hot water scalds the leaves and they become wrinkled, heavy and very sticky.

The benefits along with the aroma will be greatly spoiled by such soaking. The product is no longer suitable for a bath; it will burn strongly, and the steam will be too wet and heavy. After the procedure, the person will feel tortured and disappointed.
