Jadeite for baths: beneficial properties of the stone, and other alternatives to jadeite

When constructing a steam room and equipping it, proper organization of the heater’s operation is important. To create an optimal microclimate, several types of stones are used. They are heat accumulators and steam generators at the same time. Today it is possible to use about 20 types of minerals with different characteristics for placing in a furnace. Jadeite for a bath can be considered an ideal option. This is explained by its excellent characteristics.

What stones can be used in the steam room

Stoves installed in bathhouses must have a compartment for storing stones - a heater (stoves are often called that). They perform several functions at once and make hygiene procedures unique.

Electric or wood

What are the stones for?

  1. The main function of minerals is steam generation. The water falling on the hot stones is converted into steam, which heats the air and increases the level of moisture in the room.
  2. Stones that absorb the thermal energy released during operation of the stove are able to accumulate it for a long time and continue to heat the bathhouse.
  3. Placed in an open heater, semi-precious or simply beautifully shaped and textured minerals look aesthetically pleasing.
  4. Many types of breeds have medicinal properties, improving the functioning of the heart and blood vessels, respiratory organs, genitourinary system and some other internal organs, as well as having a beneficial effect on the skin.

sauna heater

Selecting stones for a sauna stove seems to be a simple process only at first glance. The basic requirements for minerals are as follows.

The stones must be resistant to temperature changes . This is due to the fact that they have to endure high loads. The heat produced by the oven heats them to extreme temperatures. Exposure to water contributes to uneven cooling. Not all rocks can withstand such tests without cracking and chipping. In this regard, the minerals used in heaters must have significant heat resistance.

Stones must be resistant to temperature changes

Important! Before laying, it is recommended to check the quality of the stone, which requires heating it and placing it in ice water. The mineral must maintain its integrity, which allows it to be used in the furnace. There must be confidence in the heat resistance of the stones, since low-quality rock can crack, and the hot part that flies off can burn a person.

Stones should last a long time.

Minerals must heat up quickly , and after the furnace has finished operating, they must be able to maintain the temperature in the room for a long time. Heat capacity is also one of the most important characteristics.

Choosing stones for a bath

The stones should have a beneficial effect on the well-being of people in the steam room and be environmentally friendly . The last point seems very significant, since rocks are capable of absorbing harmful substances that enter through pores from the environment. When heated, toxic inclusions will be released, causing harm to health. In this regard, minerals must be delivered from environmentally friendly areas.

It is desirable that the stones cost a budget (the best option would be to be free).

Not all stones, even those that meet the required characteristics, are suitable for placing in a kiln. They also need to be selected according to size. If minerals with a size of 7...15 cm are considered optimal for wood-burning heaters, then for equipping electric units it is better to choose smaller accessories with a fraction of no more than 7 cm. It is also necessary to pay attention to the external characteristics of the stones. They must be smooth, without cracks and free from impurities. If inclusions of other rocks are visible, there is a risk of rapid splitting of the minerals.

There are certain requirements for bath stones

Polished and crushed stones are used in steam rooms. The former provide good circulation of air masses, but take a long time to heat up. The latter are usually chosen by experienced lovers of bath procedures, since due to their large surface area they heat up quickly and give off more heat when exposed to water.

The stones must be clean, so remove dust by washing them before use.

Stones can be chipped or polished

Conclusion

In the video presented in this article you will find additional information on this topic. Also, based on the text presented above, we can conclude that jadeite is an indispensable material for creating sauna stoves. It has all the necessary qualities, although its healing properties are often exaggerated (see also the article “Sauna stoves: what they are made of and what types they are”).

Special attention should be paid to the choice. The fact is that the quality and efficiency of the stove, as well as environmental friendliness, will depend on it. Taking this into account, many craftsmen recommend purchasing this material in specialized stores and in unopened packaging.

More about jadeite

This mineral is not very common in nature. Most often it has a green tint, and can be matte, shiny, or have a pearlescent sheen.

Green Siberian jadeite for baths

Chemical formula of the stone: NaAl[Si2O6] . Alkaline pyroxene is a compound of silicon oxide with sodium and aluminum. The mineral also contains: Fe, Cu, Ag, Ca, Zn and other elements .

Types of stone

Despite the fact that the green color of the mineral is familiar to us, it can have different shades:

  • White stone is quite common , which is often used as a finishing material in construction;
  • lilac shades are very loved by jewelry craftsmen;
  • opaque blue and gray are quite inexpensive and are used for facing work;
  • pink and lemon shades are popular among souvenir and jewelry manufacturers;
  • its red and yellow color as a result of prolonged weathering;
  • in the presence of iron impurities, the mineral becomes black, such jadeite is in demand among jewelers and in the decorative decoration of baths.

    The mineral comes in different colors

A large amount of chromium in the composition causes the stone to turn green . Due to the presence of iron, jadeite turns yellow .

The mineral is popular among jewelers. They divide it into several categories.

  1. Imperial is characterized by transparency, purity and high quality. Jadeite of this class is expensive (the price of some specimens can be comparable to the cost of an emerald).
  2. Commercial is an opaque stone with transparent veins. It is used both for the production of jewelry and decor, and for the interior decoration of buildings.
  3. Utility is a low grade mineral that is quite cheap. It is used for the manufacture of souvenirs and facing materials.

Jadeite is also popular among jewelers

Jadeite deposits

Around the world today, the mineral is mined in only fifteen places: China, Japan, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, Kazakhstan, Myanmar and Russia.

Jadeite mining

There are several jadeite deposits in our country.

  1. Borusskoe . It is located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, between the Yenisei and Kantegira rivers. The stone mined here is of high quality, good physical and mechanical characteristics and is valued all over the world. It has high density and heat capacity, due to which it is able to retain heat for a long time. Boros mineral lasts a long time. The steam emanating from this jadeite is light. The rich color of the stone indicates a composition rich in microelements, which increases the healing power of the steam in the bath.
  2. Pusierskoye and Levo-Kechpelskoye are located in the Polar Urals region. Jewelry stone is mined at the first deposit, and semi-precious stone at the second deposit. However, jadeite from these places often turns out to be covered with microcracks invisible to the eye. This is explained simply: mineral deposits are located in permafrost and are subject to destruction due to constant exposure to frost. In addition, stone extraction is carried out using explosive technology, which also spoils it.
  3. Deposits in the North Caucasus and the Far East have been discovered, but have not yet been explored much.
  4. Not long ago a deposit was discovered in Yamal .

Therapeutic effect

The beneficial qualities of the mineral were known several thousand years ago. They were used in ancient China by healers. When heated, jadeite releases elements useful to humans: metasilicic acid, silver, copper, zinc, etc. They pass through the pores of the skin and the respiratory system, after which they begin to affect other parts.

Jadeite has beneficial properties

The stone is able to improve metabolic processes in the body, tone and invigorate, and have a beneficial effect on the respiratory system.

It is widely believed that heated jadeite helps with problems with the kidneys and endocrine system, hypertension, decreased immunity, and male diseases. It is useful for depression and chronic fatigue syndrome.

The health benefits of jadeite are undeniable.
Most useful substances enter the air when the crushed mineral is exposed to high temperatures. Polished jadeite releases a much smaller amount of healing components.

Application in heaters

tile material is produced from jadeite , which is used for cladding the walls of bathhouses. The demand for a material is determined by its characteristics:

  • excellent strength;
  • good heat transfer and heat resistance;
  • environmental safety;
  • disinfecting abilities;
  • aesthetics.

Using jadeite in a bathhouse
However, most often in bathhouses, stones are used that are placed in a heater. For this purpose, minerals of three fractions are usually taken. Jadeite is placed in a wood-burning stove in a strictly defined sequence.

Table. Jadeite fractions, their placement in the bath.

Size, cmAccommodation
9…13On the grill (about a third of the total volume)
7…9In the middle layer
5…7Above

Tips for choosing a mineral:

  • for electrical units it is recommended to use jadeite up to 60 mm in size;
  • It is prohibited to use stones that have a layered structure;

Stones with a layered structure cannot be used

Important! Despite the safety of jadeite, you should avoid purchasing stones for your heater that have spots or streaks of a dark gray color that are a little shiny. These may be inclusions of sulfide, which begins to smell unpleasant when exposed to high temperatures.

  • if you hit a stone against a stone, the sound should be loud;
  • You can roughly calculate the need for stones by knowing the volume of the steam room (about 3 kg of mineral is required for 1 cubic meter).

It has been noticed that when heated, jadeite can change color. This should not be alarming, as it is a feature of jadeite. It is this ability that allows the mineral to become not only a functional, but also a decorative attribute of the steam room.

When heated, the color of the stone may change

Important! It is not recommended to expose the stone to open fire.

The service life of jadeite is not too high. To extend the life of its use, the stone needs to be looked after.

  1. The mineral should be washed regularly, at least once every six months.
  2. It is recommended to periodically assess the condition of jadeite, and remove damaged stones (those with various types of defects: chips and cracks). They should not be used, as the efficiency of use is reduced due to impaired thermal conductivity.
  3. The stones in the heater must be renewed every five years (if the sauna is not used for its intended purpose very often, this can be done less often). This is approximately how long jadeite retains its performance characteristics (on average up to 5000 hours at a temperature of no more than 600°C).

Jadeite needs special care.
As already noted, jadeite, due to its physical and mechanical properties, is considered one of the best options for a bath.

Evaluating all of the above, we can conclude that jadeite is one of the best solutions for completing a sauna stove.

Brief geological overview

Like jade, which we talked about at one time, jadeite belongs to a group of minerals called jade. This is a monoclinic pyroxene with a matted fibrous structure of the massif, which has an alkaline nature and a pleasant emerald color. It differs from jade in its higher price, due to its low prevalence on an industrial scale and its increased density and strength. Some varieties of jadeite, in particular imperial, belong to the first category of precious stones, since their uniform structure, deep color and transparency make it a very attractive stone in jewelry.

As for color, green is predominant, although occasionally you can find brown, purple, yellow, and blue stones. Its color fastness is quite high, and it itself is stable, although in some cases, especially when the mineral has been weathered and has a loose structure, the effect of color “burnout” may occur, not even so much burnout, but rather a transition of the main color to a different tint or a color palette associated with the occurrence of internal chemical processes. White, pink, black jadeite is more of a metamorphosis than a classic stone, in its usual presentation.

Upon closer and careful examination, a distinct granular structure can be revealed, which visually distinguishes it from its related jade. Broken quarry stone has a dull shine, which clearly manifests itself during subsequent processing of the mineral, especially during polishing, as a result of which the shine becomes greasy, sharp, accentuated with a clear pearlescent tint.

The largest domestic stone deposit is Borusskoe, in Khakassia, and it is worth noting that it has nothing to do with the Bundesliga football club Borussia from Dortmund. We present the main physical characteristics of the stone in the form of a summary table:

Indicator nameNumeric or descriptive value
Main colorGreen, greenish gray
Stroke colorWhite
ShineGlass
TransparencyOrdinary, in particular, jadeite bath stones are opaque, ornamental stones - in the form of a cube with a side of 10 mm should be visible in natural light conditions
Mohs hardness6,5 — 7
CleavageGood, within 110 units
KinkViscous, splintery
Density3.25 - 3.36 g/cc

Varieties and colors

There are several types and shade variations of the gemstone. All of them are widely used in jewelry. The varieties are determined by the color of the stone and its transparency. The cost will depend on the type of gem, purity, grade. Experts distinguish the following types of stone:

  1. "Imperial".
    This is the most expensive type of jadeite. Bright green stones of high transparency are used for jewelry. Jewelry made from imperial jadeite is comparable in cost to emeralds, sapphires and even diamonds, as well as in the beauty of its appearance. Jadeite "Imperial"
  2. “Commercial” - also considered a precious grade, used for less expensive products.
    The price is reduced compared to imperial due to opacity. It comes in lavender, green, and coral shades. Yellowish-green commercial jadeite looks very beautiful; it makes excellent earrings, necklaces, and brooches. Jadeite "Commercial"
  3. Chloromelanite is an opaque stone similar to deep green marble with black veining due to its high aluminum and iron content.
    This variety is considered the best ornamental stone and is used for figurines, dishes, and utensils. Chloromelanite
  4. Albite is another type of mineral at the intersection of ornamental and used for making jadeite jewelry.
    It looks very unusual due to the chaotic “blots” interspersed with other elements and compounds. It comes in white, green, pink, and reddish colors. Albit jadeite
  5. “Utility” is the cheapest jadeite; it is not considered a full-fledged gemstone, but still looks elegant and noble.
    Experts recommend it for a bath: one of the properties of the stone is to maintain optimal temperature, hot or cool. Jadeite "Utility"

However, products with jadeite always look very catchy, advantageous and attractive. For constant wear, it is recommended to choose “imperial” or “commercial” varieties. Natural, untreated stone can be used as a decorative element - an interesting figurine with a natural appearance.

Popular minerals and their comparison

Minerals of volcanic origin are recognized as the best filler for sauna stoves. When heated, they emit infrared radiation, easily withstand significant temperature changes and enrich the steam room air with microelements beneficial to health.

Let's look at the most popular types and their characteristics in the table and compare them with each other.

As for the price, the most budget-friendly among natural fillers will be gabbro-diabase and basalt (25-30 rubles per 1 kg). Quartz will cost the most - from 60 rubles / kg.

Video description

Here is an interesting video on how to wash bath stones:

In order for the steam room to function properly, it is necessary to correctly calculate the mass of stones. It is believed that there should be 5-6 kg of rock per square meter. Then the desired effect and maximum durability of the heater will be achieved.

Different types of stone differ in their service life

For stoves with a closed heater, a type that is more resistant to high temperatures is needed. In open stoves, the heating is less intense, so deciding which stones are better for the heater in the bathhouse is much easier.

Mining locations

The most beautiful jadeites are mined in Burma.

The largest deposits of the gem are located in Myanmar and Guatemala, Mexico and China.

Jadeite deposits have not been developed in Russia for a long time. But they exist. The Khakass field is considered the largest in our country. In the vast expanses of Siberia, in the tributaries of the Kantegir River, there is the country’s jadeite treasury. The stone is pure white or light gray, very transparent. Often has a bluish or greenish tint.

We recommend: Rampage inclusion HAIRY

Stones of this type are considered “young” jadeite. Currently, the Chinese (experts and connoisseurs, we know this) recognize Khakass jadeite as second in the world after Burmese.

The Chinese were not lucky with Ural gems. At the end of the last century, they bought a large batch of stones from the Pusier deposit. The stone looked like jewelry jadeite. However, it turned out that all the stones were covered with microcracks and were not suitable for jewelry. Mining was also carried out using blasting operations - this improved the quality of the stone.

How much does it cost and how to spot a fake?

Jadeite is not cheap. Because of its beauty, this apple-colored stone can reach a price of 1000 rubles per gram. Even with high quality indicators, Imperial jadeite is rapidly approaching the price of emerald. However, it is not difficult to select stones within the desired price category - there is a wide choice on the market.

The authenticity of a mineral is checked simply: just toss it into the air and catch it in the palm of your hand. If the weight of the product surprises you, namely, it seems more than you expected, with a 90% chance you have a real stone. This method has often been used by traders since ancient times.

Rodingite rock

Rodingite is a metamorphic rock formed as a result of alteration of igneous deep rocks. The stone contains:

  • feldspar;
  • amphibole minerals;
  • pyroxenes;
  • precious chromium-vesuvian;
  • pomegranate.

Rodingite is classified as a strong rock with a delightful bright color. Place of extraction: Middle Urals. The stone has an insignificant coefficient of thermal expansion, it is difficult to break down and wear out, so its service life is long. Due to its increased strength, it is not changed for a long time. Microparticles of the rock, in contact with hot water, impart healing properties to the steam.

The benefits of soapstone

Soapstone stone is a specimen of volcanic origin. It retains its structure even when the temperature rises to 1600C. Characterized by the ability to give off heat in waves.

This species is characterized by:

  • light weight;
  • significant density;
  • impeccable thermal conductivity.

Soapstone for baths is an excellent choice. With regular visits to a bathhouse with soapstone, the stone will help:

  • remove mucus from the lungs;
  • increase immunity;
  • normalize blood circulation;
  • make blood vessels elastic;
  • speed up exchange processes.

Soapstone helps in weight loss, which will interest women. According to scientific research, after visiting a bathhouse where soapstone is present, a person loses 0.5-1.5 kg of weight.

Healing and magical properties

Gems are known for their beneficial healing and magical properties, and jadeite is no exception. This stone is credited with the ability to stabilize energy, normalize emotional background and regulate blood pressure.

Since ancient times, jadeite has found its use to get rid of kidney pathologies - it treats them independently, and also enhances the healing effect of medications. It is known that beads made from gemstones improve the condition of hypertension.

It is generally accepted that rings with this stone have a beneficial effect on the organs of vision, help treat myopia and relieve eye fatigue. However, it should be borne in mind that achieving a therapeutic effect is only possible if you carry the mineral with you constantly. According to ancient Chinese medicine, the energetic vibrations of jadeite have a powerful effect on every cell of the human body, thereby promoting rejuvenation, increasing internal strength, and also normalizing all internal organs and tissues.

Ancient physicians widely used jadeite powder. So, mixing it with onion juice, asthma and diabetes were successfully treated, and in combination with rice and morning dew, it was used to strengthen the musculoskeletal system - such treatment made the body flexible, strong and resilient. Wanderers drank the drink in order not to suffer from thirst and hunger.

The magical meaning of this stone deserves no less attention; here are just some of its properties.

  • Like jade, green jadeite can protect against troubles and major troubles.
  • The heavenly stone brings harmony and emotional well-being to a person’s life.
  • When worn by unbalanced and hot-tempered people, it helps reduce anger and external aggression.
  • For men and women with low self-esteem, the stone gives confidence in their abilities.
  • In order to conclude a profitable deal, it is recommended to hold a piece of jadeite in your fist when negotiating.
  • The talisman is able to protect from envious people and ill-wishers, protects against theft and the actions of scammers.
  • The effect of jadeite on the relationship between parents and children is very beneficial - the mineral helps to establish trusting relationships, allows you to achieve mutual understanding and family love.
  • Ancient people firmly believed that the mineral could stop rain or, conversely, cause it. Nowadays, the mineral has acquired the power of a talisman of productivity.
  • It is known that jadeite remains faithful to its owner throughout his life. The mineral does its best to protect its owner, protects it from troubles, shocks and the actions of unkind people, and brings family well-being and peace to relationships. There are legends that if strong aggression is directed at the owner of the stone, then jadeite takes on all the negativity and splits. If this happens, you need to bury the mineral, not forgetting to say “thank you” to it when leaving.

Application

Jadeite is widely used due to its wide characteristics and unique properties.

  • as a facing material . Due to its original color, it is used for stoves, walls, floors and swimming pools, which is especially important for saunas. Working with facing jadeite is difficult, so the master must be experienced. The stone used for lining pools is rubbed to a mirror shine. In this form, it becomes noble, looks stylish and luxurious.
  • as a filler in sauna heaters for a long time. Moreover, it is more suitable for these purposes than other natural minerals. Pouring a small amount of water onto hot stones produces light, soft and pleasant steam.
  • Lithotherapy with jadeite is becoming an increasingly popular procedure, which is provided by all self-respecting spa centers. Jadeite is credited with a number of healing properties: filling the body with energy and vigor;
  • normalization of pressure;
  • beneficial effect on the nervous system.

For jadeite treatment, oval-shaped pellets are selected. They are heated to a certain temperature, placed on the body in a special order, and then a massage session is performed with a therapeutic effect.

As a facing material

The original color attracts craftsmen; they decorate stoves, walls, and floors with stone. The work is quite complex and cannot be completed by an inexperienced stove maker. Facing will require the ability to combine stones of different sizes and shapes on one surface. Tools will be required for sanding, laying and leveling. The stove will heat up quickly, so it is often installed in steam rooms.

The complexity of independent work is appreciated by the masters of manufacturing enterprises.

For finishing the bath, you can purchase finished products. Assortment of natural wood products:

  • mosaic panels;
  • “torn” stone;
  • polished tiles;
  • “pancakes” for finishing;
  • brick;
  • regular tiles;
  • uncalibrated products.

Jadeite is chosen for cladding walls and floors. It doesn't have to be a hot air room. The stone is suitable for swimming pools. The tiles are rubbed to a mirror shine, so the room will not only be beautiful, but also noble and stylish.

Historical tales

Here we will try to tell how jadeite came to Europe, why in China it was (and is) valued along with the most expensive gems.

The Great and Terrible Conquest

People always want money. And more. Therefore, at the end of the 15th century, the king and queen of Spain decided that in India (according to rumors) precious stones and gold were practically lying on the ground. So let a couple of Spanish ships under the command of Columbus sail to a rich country and bring back that very gold and jewelry that is always in short supply.

The boats sailed and got lost along the way. Geographic maps were bad back then. Instead of Asia, we ended up in America, which no one had heard of at that time. But they stubbornly believed that they had reached Asia. Thus began the Conquest.

The locals greeted the Spaniards as dear guests. They gave us food and drink and showed us their cities and temples.

It was then that the Spaniards realized that they had come to the right place (in the sense that they found what they were going for).

I don’t want to say what the soldiers did to the aborigines. And most importantly, they robbed churches, dragging away everything that was not nailed down. Gold, amulets, Indian relics - everything was neatly stacked in the holds of the pot-bellied ships.

Among this stuff there were objects made of stone - greenish, white, pink. The stones had the property of relieving lower back pain, and the Spaniards called them piedra de ijada - “side stone”.

Then jadeite came to Europe.

The history of the mineral in the New World (Mesoamerica) is much longer. The stone was known to the Mayan, Aztec, and other aborigines from the 8th-4th centuries BC. This is confirmed by archaeologists who come across items made from jadeite. Ritual masks and jewelry were made from it. And also knives used by priests in ritual sacrifices.

Interesting: there are archaeological finds where jadeite teeth are inserted into skulls instead of ordinary, “native” teeth. It was probably prestigious back then.

Now about China. It is incorrect to believe that jadeite and jade have been held in special esteem in the Celestial Empire since time immemorial. At first it was jade.

But the artisans who processed the stone and made precious trinkets from it had trained eyes and hands. It was the masters who noticed that the jade obtained from Burma is not always the same. Some stones were denser and heavier. Treated, they shone better. These stones were jadeites.

But scientists determined that jade and jadeite are different gems only in the middle of the 19th century.

But even a description of the minerals will not help to understand what the mysterious Chinese soul found in jadeite.

Advantages of basalt

The preferred material for the bath is basalt. This black stone is very strong and is not afraid of physical impacts. Basalt stone has many advantages:

  • high density;
  • resistance to sudden and frequent temperature changes;
  • increased heat capacity;
  • low water absorption.

Basalt lasts a long time. These stones are used for 6-7 years. They are not afraid of high temperatures; after splashing cold water on them, they get wonderful steam.

But basalt has excellent qualities only if it is a high-quality product. The quality of the sample can be determined by striking it with a small hammer or other stone. A good stone will withstand such exposure. Poor basalt will crumble, forming harmful dust. When hitting, you need to listen to the sound that occurs. A good stone makes a ringing sound.

Basalt helps in the treatment of:

  • lung diseases;
  • rheumatism;
  • low blood pressure.
