All existing schemes for constructing a floating steam room can be divided into three categories:

  • House on a raft;
  • Towed floating baths;
  • Conversion of a small vessel, boat, catamaran or assembly of several boats into a bathhouse.

In the latter case, the bathhouse takes on its own course. Thanks to a small outboard motor, the floating bath complex can be driven 100-200 m from the shore and returned to the pier in the evening or in case of emergency.

There are more than enough options for constructing a bathhouse building on a floating platform. Structurally, the bath complex is built from two large modules:

  • Bathhouse box with heating equipment, insulation and rest area;
  • Floating platform with pontoons.

As a rule, there are no problems with building a bathhouse. Usually they use a standard timber frame house or a frame house, reinforced at the base with additional stiffeners, photo.


To equip a floating platform, you can make it from logs or use ready-made modules. A sauna on a raft looks quite confident, but only if the dimensions of the room do not exceed 3x4 m.

Floating baths on a platform made of pontoons are considered the safest and most reliable in operation. Traditionally, the frame for the base is made from oak or hardwood timber or, more recently, from an aluminum profile.

Plastic or steel 100-liter barrels are attached to the bottom of the floating bathhouse in three lines, according to a catamaran pattern. As a rule, the buoyancy reserve of a bathhouse on a pontoon allows you to remain on the surface of the water even in a situation where half of the tanks are flooded.

Advice! If the floating bath complex is planned to be used for a long journey on water, then in this case the supporting frame and platform must be mounted on industrially manufactured pontoons.

Let's talk about the concept

What goals does the developer pursue when discussing the possibility of building a bathhouse over the surface of the water? First of all, this is unlimited access to water for water procedures. Literally, within walking distance from the steam room. At the same time, the hassle of constructing and maintaining a pool, arranging a font or purchasing a drenching bucket is eliminated. Open water is an indescribable atmosphere that cannot be reproduced in artificial conditions. It is always pleasant to spend time in the vicinity of a river, lake or pond without unnecessary surroundings, and when strong steam and a fragrant broom are naturally woven into the pastime, no one remains indifferent. To some extent, the conditions for such a bathing holiday are provided by a mobile bathhouse on wheels, but not everywhere it is possible to place it directly on the edge of deep and clean water, not to mention going directly onto the water surface.

How is the idea of ​​a bathhouse of this kind realized? There are actually two ways.

At one time we talked in detail about bathhouses on stilts. Now let’s briefly concentrate our thoughts around this approach. A place is selected with a stable and stable bottom, clean water of sufficient depth, a picturesque view and the possibility of a normal approach to the structure from the coastline. At the same time, the possibilities of ensuring guaranteed stability of the structure during freeze-up, ice break-up, spring floods and autumn bad weather, accompanied by strong winds and rough water surface, are taken into account.

The shoreline of a water body, especially if it has a closed contour, should be characterized by maximum stability. That is, such cases should be minimized when in the spring the structure turns out to be inaccessible from the coastline due to a spill, and in the summer the water mirror loses its original area and instead of water procedures, visitors, leaving the steam room, can only take mud baths, which, although they have some benefits for health, but not so pleasant.

What objective disadvantages does this option have:

  1. In the vast majority of cases, the picturesque coastline of water bodies with clean water is located in a water protection zone, in which construction and other active economic activities are a priori prohibited. We emphasize that we are talking about law-abiding citizens, and not the trivial concept of “everything for friends, the rest is the law,” so popular among home-grown bureaucrats of various stripes and varieties.
  2. Arranging a pile foundation is a rather labor-intensive process in dry land conditions. When it is carried out on a swampy shore, then the difficulties triple, even if special construction equipment is used. At the same time, it is worth noting that the coastal zone is often characterized by significant silt deposits, several meters thick, which must be “pierced” with a pile for reliable contact with the parent soil, which already has sufficient bearing capacity.
  3. Very often, the delivery of firewood and other necessary bath items directly depends on weather conditions. Installation of the stove, its maintenance, and rotation of the stone in the basket can also cause difficulties due to the peculiarities of the location of the bathhouse structure.
  4. Due to the ongoing processes of global climate change, stationary pile-type baths may lose their practical purpose due to a radical change in the configuration of the shoreline of a water body.

Important! The last point, in some regions, is the most relevant. In hydrological practice, there are many examples when water moved away from the original coastline in a very short time, and not only in closed reservoirs, but also often in rivers.

Floating baths

This implementation option eliminates the problem of changing the configuration of the coastline, which is extremely sensitive for stationary baths. Essentially, a floating bathhouse changes its position synchronously with fluctuations in water level, including seasonal ones.

World practice has developed three main concepts for the implementation of floating baths:

  • Moored bathhouses near the berthing structure. At the mooring site, they are held either by submersible “dead anchors” or by surface-type chain or cable systems. Relevant in places where the place of permanent deployment fully satisfies the requirements for a good rest. This option places greater demands on the treatment or collection of wastewater to prevent deterioration in the sanitary condition of the parking area;
  • Towed floating baths. A non-self-propelled structure, the movement of which to the place of procedures is carried out using a small towing vessel. The concept allows for greater freedom in choosing a location, depending on specific conditions and time. However, there appears a direct, very often critical dependence on the tug. In addition, being in open water conditions raises the bar when it comes to emergency evacuation of visitors. In the event of certain force majeure circumstances or delivery of victims ashore, for example, if someone got burned or felt ill;
  • Self-propelled floating baths, equipped with their own propulsion, for moving around the water area of ​​a water body. The most interesting and, at the same time, controversial option in the galaxy of floating baths. The captain of a self-propelled bathhouse is free to choose a location in the water area and is independent of the services of a tugboat. At the same time, a legitimate question arises about registering the watercraft with the relevant supervisory authorities, since a utilitarian low-power outboard motor is often not able to confidently move a bulky structure. It is necessary to take care of the methods of towing such a watercraft in the event of an emergency situation with its own propulsion. The construction of a floating sauna is slightly different from the construction of a steam room on land. For example, “earth” structures are built on a pile, strip, columnar and monolithic foundation (depending on the soil) from a variety of materials. Regarding the body, it can be identical to an ordinary “earthly” steam room. Oh, by the way, today the barrel sauna proudly flaunts in the dazzling rays of glory. It is compact, attractive, comfortable and known for its reasonable price.

Where does the water drain from the sink? In special containers located under the bottom. After which it is poured into the sewerage system or into settling tanks on the shore. Many bathhouses, whose owners did not skimp on the arrangement, are equipped with filtration systems. What does it mean? The water is immediately discharged into the reservoir after purification, which is very convenient and practical.

As you can see, there is nothing supernatural about floating steam rooms, but, nevertheless, they give a fabulous experience! I can personally confirm this: about 5 years ago I was in Novosibirsk at the Ob Reservoir. There are no limits to emotions...

The design of a floating bath, its advantages

Often, a floating bathhouse differs from its land-based counterpart. The differences lie in the design itself, as well as in the technology of constructing the foundation and body.

Stationary baths are erected on pile, columnar and strip foundations. The following types of pontoons are used for the construction of floating baths:

The walls of a stationary bath are made of natural lumber, brick or wall blocks. Most often, a floating sauna is built from wood or using frame technology.

Floating baths, like stationary buildings, have many advantages, the main of which include:

The supporting platform of a floating bath is made of a square pipe, a steel angle or a metal profile.

Waterproof bakelite plywood is used for the deck; sanded oak boards are often laid in the washing area and rest areas.

Pontoons or barrels are made of fiberglass, cold covered with fiberglass cloth on epoxy resin. For full-size floating baths, ready-made buoyancy modules made of rotationally pressed polyethylene are used.

The blocks are connected with locks with little effort into single pontoons. The buoyancy element is attached to the metal frame of the floating bathhouse using pins and embedded elements.

The design of the water steam room differs from the stationary model only in the method of waterproofing and the room ventilation system. Basically they do this: they bring water into the house, and from the house they pull a pipe to the bathhouse. There are no fundamental differences between connecting directly to the main line or to house communications, so let’s move on to a description of how exactly you can run water from the water supply (of course, you can run it at any time).

Plumbing on top (by air)

ATTENTION! This method is least suitable for supplying water to a bathhouse for the winter, unless you take care of very significant insulation, for example, with heating wires.
The essence of the wiring is that the pipe extends above the surface of the earth . Moreover, the method itself can be called “over the top” or “over the air”.

In order to ensure the reliability of the structure over long spans, it is recommended to use a cable to which your pipe will be attached - similar to how a wire is suspended to transmit electricity through the air.

To prevent the cold water in the bathhouse from freezing in winter, the pipes must be laid at a large or slight slope. In this case, it is enough to turn off the water from the house or on the main line, and open the tap in the bathhouse and let all the water in the pipes drain. If there is no water, there will be nothing to freeze , so even polypropylene pipes will not burst.

IMPORTANT! Thus, the first rule on how to prevent the water in the bathhouse from freezing in winter is to drain it immediately after using the water supply.

But this is not the only way to run water supply to a bathhouse in winter from above. IMPORTANT! Polyethylene pipes are only suitable for cold water, because hot water causes them to stretch. But their advantage is that you can use detachable fittings on them, that is, you can do without welding during installation. It's good to have all connections visible, because detachable fittings will leak sooner or later.

If you understand that the only reason why pipes can be torn by ice is the water remaining in the pipe, then you can make your life extremely simple by carrying water into the bathhouse by air in winter and never having to deal with the fact that it has frozen. In this case, neither heating nor insulation is required - it’s enough just not to place a tap at the end of the pipe:

From the well

We will assume that you already have a well. In order to power a bathhouse from it, you will need the following:

  1. Lay a trench from the bathhouse to the well, and the desired depth of depth is one that exceeds the depth of soil freezing in your area.
  2. Place the pipe in the trench. And for insulation, “fur coats” made of foamed polymers are put on.
  3. Make a hole in the wall of the well and insert a pipe into it, connecting it to the pump that you intend to use. You can use a flexible hose to make the connection, and also install a check valve so that water from the system does not return to the well.
  4. Insulate the walls of the well. But this is done at the stage of its construction, so let’s just say that the protective house must also be insulated - this is necessary so that the water surface does not freeze in winter.
  5. Since part of the pipe is inevitably brought to the surface for installation in the bathhouse, you need to take care of insulating this area, in particular, it can be equipped with a heating cable, because the polymer “coat” may not save this area from freezing.

By the way! The heating cable can be laid all the way to the pump, but underground temperatures are above zero, if this is not a permafrost zone.

From the well

If a well is drilled on the site, then you can supply water to and from the bathhouse for the winter.

There are many different options for schemes for carrying water into a bathhouse from a well, which is due to different specifics, but there are elements that will remain unchanged in any case.

The minimum set required for supplying water from a well is the well itself, a pump and a hydraulic accumulator.

There are three types of wells - surface (upper water), up to the sandy horizon and up to the limestone horizon.

Surface ones are most often not suitable for hygienic procedures, because they contain wastewater from the sewerage system.

Up to a sandy horizon can only be good if there is a layer of clay or loam separating the sands from surface waters.

The best quality water is from artesian wells, but there it can be hard (contain carbonates). However, for a bath it is better than E. coli in the washing water.

Pumps are also different, the main division in our case is into deep and surface. The first ones dive into the well itself, the second ones work in the bathhouse.

ADVICE! Pumps and pumping stations vary in power. You need to take the one that is a little more powerful than what is needed in your case. At least one meter more water column.

When calculating the power, it is also necessary to add to the height of the water column the distance from the well to the pump at the rate of: 10 m of distance is equal to 1 meter of water column.

The third necessary element is a hydraulic accumulator. This is a container with a rubber ball filled with air inside. Water compresses it when the tank is filled, air contracts in volume and resists the water. The pressure switch ensures that it remains within an acceptable range.

Usually a cleaning filter is installed after it. Which one depends on how polluted the water is. There may be several filters of varying degrees of purification.

Next, you decide for yourself whether you will have a storage tank or not, and if so, where it will be located. The same applies to the heating column or boiler. The main thing is that filling water from a well requires only the elements listed above, the rest is optional.

Construction technology

A floating steam room differs from one installed on the shore only in increased requirements for waterproofing and specific ventilation. You will definitely need to treat all external surfaces with mastic - and especially the base of the building. The use of frame floating baths based on galvanized profiles is widespread. For insulation, a mineral wool slab with a foil layer is often used. The outer layers are formed on the basis of foam boards.

Any wooden parts must be coated with a layer of epoxy yacht varnish. Other impregnations will have to be abandoned.

It is necessary to fix the pontoon using briquettes and pipes if they can be deepened into the bottom by 1 m, but it is easier to use cables or chains. The work will require the use of special machines; the supports must correspond to the size and weight of the bathhouse.

Among the available materials, adobe also stands out favorably.

The walls are made either using the half-timbered method or using the “heavy adobe” technology. The second option requires more time and effort. But the walls can have almost any arbitrary shape, and are not limited to the rectangular configuration. Adobe is economical and safe in environmental and sanitary terms.

You can also build a bathhouse:

  • from pallets;
  • from sleepers;
  • from OSB;
  • from wood concrete.

But still, the vast majority of developers prefer:

  • brick;
  • frame-panel construction;
  • traditional log house;
  • a newer gas block (although this solution is causing a lot of criticism).

Beautiful examples

This photo shows an elegant floating bathhouse in the middle of a pond. The squat, elongated building is covered with a gable roof made of metal tiles. There is even a semblance of a small terrace for relaxing after bath procedures.

And this is a bathhouse on a pontoon, made like a barrel (as evidenced by the similarity of shapes). Overall, the result was a rather original and, apparently, quite practical solution.
