Let's discuss how to correctly install various types of gutters? Here we will also discuss what are the common mistakes when doing this job and how to avoid them?
After the new roof structure has been installed, the next important stage of work begins - installation and installation of the drainage system. Not only a specialist can install a drainage system, but you can do it yourself, for which you can use the tips from the video. Practice has shown that when installing fasteners and fixtures for drainpipes and gutters, serious mistakes are made, which makes it seem as if there is no drainage at all. Fastening gutters: rules, examples, mistakes today can be studied on numerous sites on the Internet, where there are a lot of illustrations, photographs and videos, with expert advice.
Installing gutter holders
Now that you have thoroughly prepared, you can proceed directly to installing a drainage system on your home. Start by installing gutter hooks—properly called gutter holders or brackets. There are two types of gutter holders:
- Attached to the sheathing. They are installed before installing the final roofing covering, since they need to be attached to the sheathing.
- Attached to the cornice. If your roof is already finished, use an eaves gutter holder. It has a shorter riser end that is sewn directly to the fascia board. It can be installed at any time, even on a finished roof.
So, installation of brackets begins with calculating the slope of the gutter. For effective water drainage it should be 3-5 mm per 1 m.
For example, your cornice is 9 m, which means the maximum slope of the gutter will be 45 mm.
If the length of the cornice is more than 10 meters, we recommend making the gutters slope in different directions. This is necessary so that you do not have to lower one edge of the system too much.
Don't forget that:
- for every 10 m of gutter - one drainpipe;
- conventional gutter holders are attached at a distance of 600 mm, cornice holders - 500 mm.
Next, on the bottom board of the sheathing or the front board (depending on which holders you use - regular or cornice), mark the places where the first and last brackets are attached. Pull the string between them and mark the remaining fasteners. Using a bender, bend the hooks to the required length and screw them to the sheathing. They need to be mounted so that the lower edge of the bracket touches the rope.
How to make your own fasteners
Now we move on to the fastening part of the house's drainage system. There are two varieties:
- brackets for gutters;
- and brackets for drain pipes.
The first can be made from a metal strip 2-3 mm thick and 20-30 mm wide or from wire with a diameter of 4-5 mm. You just need to bend the metal profile to the required size and shape. Approximately the same as shown in the figure below. The shank of the bracket can be bent or be as shown in the photo, all this will depend on how it will be attached to the load-bearing element of the roof.
As for brackets with a clamp for riser pipes, it is more difficult to make it yourself, so here’s some advice:
Advice! Buy clamps at a hardware store; they are cheaper than funnels. In addition, you can choose them by color so that it matches the color of the pipes.
Installing the outlet funnel
After the installation of hooks for the Metal Profile drain is completed, you can install gutters on them. However, before you install all the trays in place, some of them will need to cut holes for the outlet funnel in advance. The width of this cutout, as a rule, is not less than 10 cm. At the same time, at least 15 cm must remain to the edge of the gutter.
Important: When cutting drainage elements, do not use a grinder! It will burn the polymer coating on the drain, and corrosion can quickly begin in damaged areas. Stock up on a hacksaw and metal scissors.
Now we attach the funnels themselves. We hook the front solid part under the outer bend of the gutter. Then we press the funnel against the tray and bend the teeth on the opposite side of the gutter.
To prevent small debris and leaves from falling into the drainpipe, spiders can be installed on the funnels - special retention nets. But do not forget to clean them periodically, at least once a season, otherwise the throughput of the drain will drop sharply.
About plastic drains
If you have thoroughly mastered the technique of assembling gutters from painted steel, then installing PVC systems will not be a big problem. The order of work and technology of execution remains the same, but there are a number of differences:
- the diameter of the small pipe is 87 mm;
- due to the light weight of the parts, you can install the drainage system alone;
- maximum step for installing hooks is 50 cm;
- the funnel is a separate element built into the gutter; there is no need to cut a hole;
- plastic parts can be cut with a grinder, but you will have to clean out the sagging;
- the distance between pipe clamps is no more than 150 cm.
Steel and plastic drainage systems are equally “afraid” of snow falling off the roof. From a large amount of snow, the former are deformed, and the latter can break. Therefore, snow retainers are required on the roof, and the outer edge of the gutter should fall 2 cm below the slope line of the coating, as shown in the diagram above.
We install gutters
The next point in the instructions for installing a metal drain is the installation of gutters. Start with the lowest level (the one with the funnel). Install them one after another with a slight overlap of 2-3 cm. Fix them with holders - for this they have a special petal that bends inside the gutter.
We fasten the gutters to each other, as well as to the corner elements, using a connector with a rubber seal. We hook the short flange of the connector to the inner edge of the gutter and press the part against it. Place the front hook on the outer edge of the gutter and close the lock.
The ends of the gutters, if they do not connect into a closed perimeter, close with plugs. This can be done using a regular mallet, without additional fasteners.
Important: For additional insulation, coat all connections with roofing sealant. Please note: not silicone, but roofing - on a rubber or bitumen basis.
How to attach metal brackets for gutters
I would like to separately highlight the features of installing metal elements. There should be no difficulty in attaching them, primarily due to the high precision of production.
The first step is to calculate the dimensions and fastening diagram of the drain to determine the exact number of hooks.
The second step is calculating the angle of inclination and marking. First, the point furthest from the funnel is marked; it is more convenient to mark with a marker, using a tape measure or meter.
The third step is that lengthwise metal gutters are easier to connect on the ground using rivets and sealant.
The fourth step is to fix the hooks using self-tapping screws. If the design of the holder has a lock, it is closed.
Downpipes and elbows
To install risers, you will need a whole set of elements. This:
knee; | |
connecting pipes; | |
drainpipes; | |
drain elbows; | |
wall mounts for pipes. |
So, in order to bypass the eaves of the building when installing a metal drainage system, an elbow is connected to the outlet funnel, then a connecting pipe and another elbow. Then all this goes into the drainpipe. Initially, the connecting pipe has a crimp on both sides, but in fact you may not need the entire pipe, but only part of it. Therefore, after you cut off a piece of the required length, you will have to slightly reduce its diameter on the cut side so that the pipe fits into the elbow. To do this, you will have to work with corrugated pliers or ordinary pliers.
Design
Roof drains are devices necessary for collecting water from roof slopes and delivering it to storm drains. The drainage system consists of a set of pipes. It includes the following elements:
Design of external roof drainage system
- Gutters. Gutters are semicircular or rectangular halves of pipes. They are installed around the perimeter of the building so that liquid from the slopes does not spoil the wall finishing material, but leaves the blind area of the house in an orderly manner. They are produced in different diameters to suit any slope area and amount of precipitation.
- Drain funnels. Drain funnels are devices that resemble a funnel in appearance. They are mounted on a gutter to redirect liquid to the storm drain.
- Gutters. Vertical pipes that are connected to the gutter through a water intake funnel are called drains. Through them, melt and rainwater enters the sewer system. Typically, when developing a roof drainage scheme, several drains are placed in different places in the house. Gutters are located above the storm drain grate so that the water flowing from them does not erode the soil or concrete area around the house.
- Brackets. Brackets are the hooks needed for fastening. With their help, drains and gutters are fixed on the walls and eaves of the building. The strength of these elements determines whether the gutter will withstand the weight of snow or collapse.
Metal gutters
Products for external drainage equipment made of metal are very popular. They are made by pressing from zinc alloy steel. As a rule, they have a semicircular shape, in rare cases rectangular. Self-installation of metal gutters is so common due to the following qualities:
- High resistance to corrosion. Galvanized steel does not react and therefore does not rust. Thanks to this, metal products to ensure water drainage from the roof have a long service life.
- Mechanical strength. The design of gutters, funnels and drains made of metal is strong enough to withstand significant snow loads. Branches falling from trees and falling debris do not cause harm or damage structural elements.
- Resistant to temperature changes. The strength of steel does not decrease in either extreme heat or cold. Even a sharp change from positive to negative temperature does not affect its integrity.
- Fire resistance. The steel parts that make up the drainage system of the house do not burn and do not support combustion, and therefore comply with strict fire safety standards.
Plastic gutters
To reduce the load on the roof rafter frame, manufacturers have developed additional elements for assembling the drain made of plastic or, as it is correctly called, polyvinyl chloride. It differs from metal models:
- A light weight. Plastic drains, gutters and funnels weigh several times less than the same galvanized parts. Therefore, the installation of plastic gutters is possible even on old roofs, where it is simply risky to increase the load on the rafters.
- Varied color palette of elements. Even the most budget manufacturers offer their customers a choice of 6-8 colors. If we talk about expensive products, the range of shades is not limited to a dozen items, so you can easily choose a color to match the roofing material or walls of the house.
- Complete tightness of connections. Plastic models of gutters, drains and funnels are connected into a single system more tightly, so leaks occur less frequently.
- Full selection of components. The range of elements for assembly is a paradise for owners of non-standard roofs whose angles are not 90 degrees. This variety allows for many individual configurations.
- Affordable price. According to construction consultants, the price of plastic products is 1.5-2 times lower than that of high-quality metal products.
Pipe holders
To securely fix the drain riser, you will need pipe holders with fasteners suitable for your wall material - brick or wood.
Mount the holders to the building wall in one meter increments. Also, regardless of the distance, holders must be installed at all pipe joints. Drain pipes can be cut to the required length on site.
Connect them together by inserting them into holders and secure them with special locks.
Let's sum it up
It is important that the holders are securely fixed, located with the required spacing, and during installation it is important to take into account the angle of the slope. And, of course, it is important that the fastenings themselves are of high quality. These are exactly the ones presented on our Vodostokstroy website. Our products are manufactured according to GOST from galvanized steel 4 mm with a polymer layer. In the RAL table you can choose a suitable color so that the holders look harmonious on the roof.
All Vodostokstroy fastenings are immune to corrosion and UV radiation, dirt and mechanical stress.
Installation in small private houses and mansions is acceptable. All products are guaranteed and delivered throughout the Moscow region and other regions. For details, contact managers by phone. 09.25.2020Return to list
Advantages of PVC over metal for drainage systems
Gutters for roofs of houses are made from various materials:
- polyvinyl chloride;
- steel with anti-corrosion galvanization;
- metal coated with polymers;
- copper;
The choice of a plastic gutter base is more optimal for several reasons, the main ones: lower load on the house structure and lower cost.
Many people believe that metal is much stronger and more reliable than PVC, but modern technology creates modified and reinforced plastic that can perform well in constantly changing weather conditions. Companies that have their own production, including the Alta Profile company, add modifiers to the composition of polyvinyl chloride, which seriously increase the stability of the plastic. There are many advantages of Alta profile plastic gutters:
Wide temperature range. Plastic parts are specially designed to withstand large changes
This is very important for the Russian climate, when the heat in summer can be stifling, and the frost in winter can be bitter and penetrating. PVC profile from the Alta company retains its qualities from minus to plus 50 degrees Celsius
Important. You can be sure that in the summer the drain will not melt, and in the winter it will not burst.
High strength characteristics. Naturally, PVC is inferior to metal in this regard, but this technologically advanced material can easily withstand the loads that are placed on the drain during operation. If you install all the parts of the system correctly, then the plastic drain will not be afraid of heavy melted snow falling from the roof in the spring.
Durability. In this indicator, polyvinyl chloride outperforms metal - if in atmospheric conditions, with regular contact with water, metal parts, even galvanized, last about 7-8 years, plastic drainage - about 25 years.
Low weight of the entire structure
This is important because the greater the load on the load-bearing walls and foundation of the house, the faster they collapse. Considering the weight of the entire roof (rafter system, roofing material), it makes sense to choose a drainage system made of plastic
Tightness. This is of great importance for a high-quality drainage system. The absence of leaks protects against liquid getting on the walls and foundation of the building. The Alta Profile company creates systems with effective insulation of parts - all drainage elements have rubber seals that prevent water from flowing even through minimal gaps. Special sealants are also used that additionally protect against water.
Excellent conductivity. Plastic pipes have a smooth surface, which prevents blockages from occurring - leaves and other small debris simply do not stick to the inner walls.
Attention. The surface is so smooth that even ice cannot grip
Low noise level. PVC is made in such a way as to provide good sound insulation and not create noise when removing precipitation from the roof. This is an obvious advantage over metal gutters.
Easy installation. The entire design of the drainage system is logical. When purchasing an Alta profile kit, the consumer receives detailed instructions for installing the system on the roof with their own hands.
Great looks. A gutter is not just an impersonal mechanism for removing precipitation from the roof, now it is a design element that makes the house more beautiful
What is important is that it does not set off the architecture of the building, but emphasizes all the advantageous places. In addition to functionality, the system adds neatness and style to any home.
Low cost. This indicator is important for most Russian families, especially when building their own home, when expenses are already high. Alta profile plastic gutters are an opportunity to purchase high-quality products at an adequate cost.
Made of wood
Having a dacha or country house, it is easy to find this material. For temporary use for a short period, a couple of hours is enough.
Temporary drainage is made from 150x10mm boards. The length of the boards is equal to double the perimeter. For example, the perimeter of the roof overhang is 100 m, which means the sum of the lengths of the boards should be 200 m.
The boards are nailed together at right angles. The resulting corners are overlapped, resulting in long gutters. For temporary construction, temporary hooks are made from boards and iron. Gutters are attached to the resulting brackets.
The bracket can be made of wood. A triangle with a landing for gutters is cut out of a wooden beam. The brackets are nailed or wired to the roof. When installing, the edges of the perpendicular gutters must overlap.
Having adjusted the slope of the gutter, we proceed to the drain. It can be made from pieces of tin or by making another trench that reaches to the ground.
The main task of such a drain is to drain water from the foundation of the house. Next, you can dig a groove to drain the water or take it under a tree. The water should move away from the house by about 1.5 - 2 m.
A temporary gutter looks a little silly, but it can last for over a year.
Until the owners save money or come up with another option. To protect wood from moisture, you can use plastic film secured with tape, a furniture stapler or small nails.
There is another option for making a gutter. Dissolving a small log into 2 parts. Using a chisel, cutting out an oval, you get an excellent gutter. The method of attaching to the roof remains the same.
- Protective nets are installed to get rid of fallen leaves and debris. It's easy to make yourself. To do this, you need a fine mesh, which is cut into strips 6 cm wider than the width of the gutter (3 cm more on each side). You can attach it using clamps or wire.
- Cleaning the drainage system from dirt and debris will prolong its life and protect it from blockages. Clean with a brush or by hand, removing sticks. A clogged drain allows water to leak onto the walls and foundation of your home.
Master's recommendations
If you build a drain from plastic bottles with your own hands, you will have to calculate the dimensions of all elements as accurately as possible. An error may result in the system not fully performing its functions. Therefore, it is recommended to use ready-made plastic elements; they can be found on sale at an affordable price. You need to start the device by installing funnels. However, this rule is only true for those cases when these elements are installed to the roof itself using brackets.
If their installation will be carried out on gutters, then work must begin by attaching the brackets. In this case, you will have to provide a slope to the system. To do this, a rope must be tied to the bracket, which is located at the farthest distance from the funnel, and its second end is secured to the funnel. This marking will allow you to determine at what height all other brackets need to be installed.
When installing a gutter yourself, after completing the fastening of the holders, you can install the gutters. You need to start doing this from the funnel. At the same time, sealing should be carried out. If the facade has protrusions, then it is necessary to install corners, which are specially shaped connectors. The ends of the gutter must be closed with plugs. At the final stage, you will need to install drain pipes; their installation begins from the funnels. Fastening must be done using clamps, installing them every two meters.
In this case, it is important to follow two rules, one of which involves ensuring a distance of 30 centimeters between the main elements and the blind area. The second rule states that this distance is reduced to 15 cm if a linear drain is installed
