The Russian bathhouse has three main goals - to heal the body, relax the soul, and plunge into an atmosphere of friendly communication.
Not every building will be able to meet the necessary criteria, but it’s worth talking about a comfortable and practical bathhouse interior. Of course, the room should be comfortable, functional and at the same time stylish. The interior, made in the Russian style, is a classic.
Beautiful interior inside
In fact, everyone is provided with such familiar attributes as brooms, hats, buckets, gangs. Only by adhering to the integrity of the overall style and competently choosing the necessary accessories can you make your sauna unique and its interior special.
Design depends on the choice of material
Requirements for finishing materials
Many owners of summer cottages prefer to order turnkey finishing of the bathhouse. For independent work, the building materials market provides its customers with a wide selection of various products at affordable prices.
Among the rich assortment, it is quite difficult to make the best choice. There are a number of criteria by which you should evaluate materials before purchasing:
- Resistant to moisture combined with high temperatures.
- Safety for humans. Coatings used for finishing must not contain toxic impurities or toxic resins.
- Estimated duration of operation.
In order to maintain hygiene and cleanliness, disinfection measures must be carried out regularly in the bathhouse. The compliance of the purchased material with this requirement should also be checked.
Most specialists and craftsmen prefer wood: timber, lining. It is also important to evaluate the type of wood. It is not recommended to use coniferous wood for interior decoration, which releases caustic resins when heated.
Russian style
A mandatory rule of any harmonious structure is that outside and inside it is necessary to adhere to a single style. Baths in the Russian style are mainly built from wooden logs, and therefore even a modern building looks the same in appearance as our great-grandfathers - a structure made of untreated wood, measuring 4x6 meters, with a height of approximately 3.5 meters .
We maintain a single style
To be considered an original Russian style, pay attention to elements such as:
- multi-tiered shelves;
- a large wooden table with benches around;
- working fireplace;
- a huge tub of water, wooden ladles and buckets;
- red brick stove-heater;
- wooden floor boards, brooms from different types of wood, towels and sheets.
Spirit of Russian style
There may be many such small and not so small details, but they have one common feature - all the design elements of a Russian bathhouse are of natural origin, consisting of natural materials.
Exclusively natural materials
It is dangerous to use synthetic or plastic material; when heated, such shelves can release toxic substances, cause burns, and poisoning.
In the shower room and locker room, use materials such as wood, boards, natural textiles, and ceramics. All this will create a cozy atmosphere, and things made by hand will add warmth and soulfulness.
Unity of comfort and relaxation
Step-by-step arrangement of a bathhouse
Do-it-yourself interior decoration of a bathhouse consists of several stages:
- Preparation of wall panels.
- Construction of sheathing.
- Fastening lining or timber.
- Flooring finishing.
- Construction of shelves.
The finishing of the steam room in the bathhouse is completed by protecting the ceiling. For this purpose, foil or a special membrane is used. Such coatings can not only protect the ceiling from exposure to hot steam, but also remain absolutely safe for visitors to the steam room.
Room interior
There is no more suitable place where you can simultaneously relax after a busy work week, imbue yourself with harmony, and cleanse your body than a sauna or bathhouse, which is closer in spirit to the Russian spirit.
For many, visiting it is a tradition that is supported by every generation, and is often instilled in families from early childhood, so it is not surprising that our compatriots want to have their own bathhouse in the backyard.
Great place to relax
The environment inside should give harmony and tranquility. This atmosphere is achieved by the combination of all parts of the interior. You should not think that the type of Russian baths is a standard steam room with a stove and the same type of shelves. A designer interior is always distinguished by original details and decor; only by implementing an individual project can you get a stylish room for couples and relaxation.
Stylish do-it-yourself room
Quality, thoughtful finishing and accompanying accessories are three pillars of internal content that will never cause you any inconvenience. For information on how to equip the interior, I will tell you today. These ideas can be used both at home, for your own needs, and for business.
Thoughtful finishing is the key to success
Preparing wall panels
Preservation and proper distribution of heat inside the steam room is a key element in the operation of the bathhouse. To maintain a constant temperature without additional losses, the walls should be properly prepared:
- The walls are thoroughly cleaned of construction debris and dust.
- The next step is thermal insulation using mineral wool for this purpose. As an alternative, it is better to choose basalt wool, which has a longer service life.
A cork is placed on top of the cotton wool, which is resistant to moisture and is not subject to rotting or fire. If the steam room is properly finished, a pathogenic fungus, which is the causative agent of a number of infectious diseases, will not appear between the layers of the walls.
Restroom
The dressing room is the first room that a person sees when entering the bathhouse. This is the most spacious room that can surprise a visitor with its originality; there is often a window in the dressing room. Unlike the steam room and shower, the creation of designer lounges can be expanded, allowing guests to enjoy an extraordinary approach.
A room with everything you need
This interior space is necessary for relaxation in order to make a comfortable break between “steam sessions.” A table is often placed in the hall to make it convenient to drink herbal tea; remember that hot drinks are contraindicated in the bathhouse. There are extra sofas, armchairs or benches in the room.
Table for soulful tea parties
If there is high humidity in the waiting room, it is better to install wooden furniture. Woven sofas and armchairs will eventually “catch” mold and mildew.
The design and nuances of the relaxation room in the bathhouse depend on the preferences of the owners. This is a unique room with a multifunctional purpose. Modern baths often have an entrance vestibule, a kitchenette, a toilet, and a swimming pool.
Swimming pool for baths
An important element and constant component of the relaxation room in the bathhouse are dishes. It is worth paying attention to the original cups and plates with traditional folk notes in the ornament. To decorate the table in the bathhouse, a popular favorite is the colorful Russian samovar.
People's favorite - samovar
Accents for finishing the dressing room in the bathhouse are placed on soft wood, for example, pine or Nordic spruce. You can diversify wood elements with stone, brick, tile or plastic. Modernist notes in a style that is rarer in our area, such as oriental, English, will be complemented by appropriate furniture, mirrors, paintings, chandeliers, fabrics and other accessory subtleties.
Bath accessories
The living room in the bathhouse can be considered a guest bedroom if it has full beds and is equipped with bedding, slippers and robes.
Construction of sheathing
In a steam room, the arrangement of lathing is not at all necessary, but its presence makes it easier to attach the main material. The most optimal option is a lathing with dimensions of 50*50 cm.
The material for the construction of support posts, as a rule, is wooden slats, or less often a metal profile. All wooden parts must be pre-impregnated with moisture-resistant oil. Metal surfaces are coated with an anti-corrosion compound.
Fastening the base material
The most painstaking part of the work is fastening the material chosen for interior decoration. The connection is made using brass self-tapping screws. When finishing the inside of a bathhouse with your own hands, follow a certain sequence:
- Before installing the timber (lining), ventilation hatches must be installed. To do this, attach a spacer rail, through which the necessary gap is then formed.
- They begin to fasten the lining, following from the corner joints. Each part is attached strictly vertically, perpendicular to the axis of the sheathing. This stage is very important, since it will ensure a high-quality drainage of accumulated moisture in the future.
- The spikes at the joints should be facing upward to prevent water from getting between adjacent parts.
In hard-to-reach places and corners of the room, the lining is cut to the required size. A separate stage of work is insulation from the heat source (furnace).
You can reliably protect wall panels from hot surfaces using metal, red brick or fire-resistant tiles. Sometimes heat-resistant slabs made of cement and synthetic admixtures are used for this purpose.
Sauna
Sauna is another widespread type of bathhouse in Russia, and its popularity is facilitated by the fact that creating the conditions of a Finnish bathhouse is much simpler and cheaper than a Russian bathhouse. Any metal stove is suitable for this. And if your ventilation is properly arranged, then you can enjoy the heat of a sauna much faster than the warmth of a Russian bath, which, as you know, takes several hours to heat.
So, Finnish sauna - high temperature, low humidity. People come not to steam, but to sweat. Finns prefer to do this while sitting, but their shelves are arranged in such a way that you can lie down if desired. However, a lot of space is not wasted; the shelves are usually made of three tiers, so they are relatively narrow - 60 centimeters wide.
INTERESTING! Finns do not soar each other with brooms, so the space between the tiers is usually covered with clapboard - there is no need to leave space for the soaring person’s legs.
Materials
So, the design of a steam bath-sauna is usually quite simple and ascetic - Finns prefer natural materials, modern processing and the same modern design.
Wood in a sauna is as familiar as in a Russian bathhouse. However, it is not stylized; on the contrary, it is more likely to be timber, lining, a neat block house than a log house. And the likelihood of painting with opaque (hiding the texture) paint is just as high as for varnish.
Metal - metal stoves have a modern design, sparkle with mirrored stainless steel surfaces and have long been preferred in electric versions. Apart from stoves, metal is not used systematically in the sauna; it has nothing special to do in the steam room. But stainless steel parts can be used as fasteners, for example.
Glass. But they love it in saunas. Transparent and frosted doors are made from heat-resistant material, which can be decorated with a variety of patterns. No one will forbid you to do the same with windows. In addition, the very focus on modernity suggests the possibility of using glass in the form of shelves, for example.
Stone - its use in a sauna can be limited to a pile of stones in an open heater, or it can become a stylish element of wall decoration.
Styles
We would say that the current sauna is in itself a fusion of tradition with new technologies, so there is no gap, no retreat into the archaic and no desire (among the Finns) to abandon traditional wood. Therefore, a rather nice unified style emerges, in which the Finns set the tone. And those who buy Finnish items to equip their sauna automatically borrow and reproduce it.
To understand the basic parameters, so to speak, of the style, just look through the catalogs of stoves - there, by the way, you can also find ready-made saunas for sale.
And if we talk about trends, then, as usual in Europe, they are aimed at maximum environmental friendliness, maximum comfort for a modern person who has no time for anything, and maximum minimalism, if we talk about detailing - everything is simple, aesthetically pleasing, devoid of decor and doesn’t even need bright color accents.
Flooring installation
The material used for interior flooring must be safe for visitors to the steam room. At the same time, the coating should not cause difficulties in practical care.
It is not recommended to use linoleum or smooth tiles for finishing. As with wall decoration, you can choose wood as a floor covering. With pre-impregnation, wood becomes resistant to moisture and the development of pathogenic fungi, being particularly durable.
This coating does not contain toxins and harmful resins (with the exception of coniferous wood). As an alternative material, you can use cement pouring followed by laying relief tiles.
Shower room
The shower room is an innovation inherent in the modern bathhouse; it demonstrates how you can isolate yourself from prying eyes. It is preferable to tile a room, adding colorful elements to the design, such as mosaics and stained glass. There is a special requirement for the floor covering; it must have a rough texture. The range of equipment for washing is quite large. Installation of a shower, jacuzzi, swimming pool is allowed.
Installation of a shower stall
If you build according to the model of your ancestors, then huge tubs filled with water installed on top will look more harmonious. Naturally, the height of such a homegrown soul should exceed the height of an adult. To get a “shower”, you need to pull the string, after which you are guaranteed an invigorating waterfall.
Huge tubs filled with water
It’s good if the shower room is equipped with shelves and cabinets for storing clean towels, felt hats, sheets, brooms and other paraphernalia, without which a steam room is not a steam room.
The walls inside the shower can be painted or made of wood, but in this case the tile will be functional. Ceramics on the wall will prevent the appearance of fungus and mold, and in addition, it is easy to keep clean and disinfect.
Ceramics on the wall and floor
Construction of shelves
For finishing the inside of the bath, this stage is the final step. The shelf should not only be convenient to use, but also be safe for humans.
The material used should not heat up too quickly and also cool down quickly, maintaining a comfortable temperature at the same level.
Once again, wood should be chosen as a universal base. When properly treated, the coating does not rot, does not cause allergic reactions, and can last for more than one season.
Particular attention is paid to preliminary grinding of surfaces on which there should be no knots or nicks.
Selecting steam room parameters in a bathhouse
Before starting to design a steam room, it is important to determine not only its parameters, but also the size of the dressing room. To do this you need to adhere to the following rules:
- The area of the steam room depends on the number of users, with an average of about 0.7 square meters per person. m. For small steam rooms with seating, the area per person is reduced accordingly;
- The ceiling height of the steam room should be calculated at 20 cm greater than the height of the tallest user. The most suitable height, according to experts, is 2.20-2.40 m;
- too high a height in a steam room for a bath will require more heating power, since the heat from the stones always rushes upward;
- Depending on the type (sedentary or lying down) and the number of shelves, the width of the steam room depends. When calculating the minimum width, the height of the tallest user plus an additional 20 cm is taken into account;
- It is necessary to leave some gap in the form of an air gap from the stove to the walls and shelves in order to ensure the safety of its operation.
In addition, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the finishing and thermal insulation layers.
Arrangement of the waiting room
Equally important is the finishing of the dressing room, the main function of which is to retain heat. For the design of wall panels, preference is given to coniferous wood. Be sure to install a bathroom and washing room.
All wooden surfaces must be pre-impregnated with moisture-resistant oil in order to protect them from rotting and the development of pathogenic fungi.

Source:
By the beginning of the 20th century, bath culture had gained such popularity in Budapest that in 1934 it acquired the unofficial title of “spa city.” One of the most popular baths in the city is the Gellert Baths, which have existed since 1913. They include 13 baths, including two main sauna sections, three outdoor pools and 8 thermal baths. The bathhouses are decorated with magnificent mosaics, sculptures, and huge panoramic windows are simply a work of art.
